A Look Back at August & Summer

A Look Back at May

Every month, I’m taking a look back at the things I learned, loved, and lived through. I’m also looking forward to the next month. Here’s my look back at August 2016.

LEARNED

Throughout August, I chased one thing: a vacation. I had an itch to hop on a plane and go. It didn’t matter where. But the thing about traveling is 1. you need money and 2. if you keep putting off booking your plans because of fear or indecision, the more you’ll need money.

When I get wanderlust, it’s my mind’s way of telling me she needs a break. A lesson I learned the hard way is stepping back. That’s why my 3rd blogiversary giveaways are items that will hopefully help others relax. It’s important to destress, to chase sanity, and to – as Annie said – look for lovely. Speaking of which….

LOVED

Looking for Lovely by Annie F. Downs is a great book to add to your to-read list, and here are my thoughts on it.

“The Insanity of God” movie was AMAZING! I saw it last night as a one-time theater event by Lifeway through Fandango. It is “the true story of missionaries Nik and Ruth Ripken. After the death of their son, this ordinary couple journeys into the depths of the persecuted church, asking the question- IS JESUS WORTH IT?

Here’s what you need to know. There’s a one-night encore presentation on Tuesday, September 13. Mark your calendars, invite your friends, and remember to bring tissues.

Because of Starbucks Iced Coconut Milk Mocha Macchiato (a hit or miss for the baristas in my area), I decided to try 1/4 cup of coconut milk coffee creamer with a tablespoon of vanilla syrup, about 1/3 cup of iced coffee, and lots of ice. It was delicious! I went to Starbucks and ordered an iced coffee with coconut milk and toffee nut syrup. It was a fail. Not a good combination. It’s sickly sweet. Lesson learned.

LIVED THROUGH

After not booking a vacation, I went to an aquarium with my brother. It was an hour and 20 minutes away. I’m no longer used to driving long distances, so I’m glad to have made it through the drive back at night. It was a nice, chill day. I learned that penguins usually mate for life, but in captivity where their life span is longer, they change mates because their mates might pass away. The oldest male and female penguins in the aquarium lost both their mates, but found each other. Aww….

I am on track with Modern Mrs. Darcy’s 2016 Reading Challenge! I’ve read 8 books in 8 months. Actually, I’ve read 9 books. One was for my ASL class and didn’t fit an unchecked category on the list. I’ve also started to read other books for my online class, but it’s been hard to finish them especially when there are no quizzes, discussions, or essays on the books.

My plans for the rest of the categories:

A book you should have read in school: CS Lewis’ Mere Christianity. It was required reading for a class, so of course, I didn’t finish reading it. Shame, I know. It’s either this or one of the other books I was supposed to read for my online class.

A book chosen for you by your spouse, partner, sibling, child, or BFF: tbd

A book published before you were born: LM Montgomery’s Anne of Green Gables because Modern Mrs. Darcy recommended it for INFP’s.

A book you’ve already read at least once: tbd or Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, which I read for this challenge and I just fell in love with reading. I already loved the story, but I enjoyed reading it. I might save this for December just because it seems like a great book to curl up with in front of the fireplace, under a blanket, and with a cup of peppermint hot chocolate.

LOOKING FORWARD

It’s official. I’m not looking forward to my Biological Psychology class. It’s a lot of scientific information to remember and I’m horrible at memorization. Pray for me, please. But I like my online courses, so there’s that.

I am looking forward to the 2016 Blog-tember Challenge, which begins tomorrow! I’m excited to join Bailey Jean over at Brave Love Blog for the challenge.

I’m going to Seattle! …in October, but I’m still looking forward to it.
