Go for Going Solo

One of the most daunting things for a single person is to attend events alone, which is why I encourage all you single ladies to do just that. This holiday season, attend events even if you have to go solo. Never forsake your safety of course, but take a deep breath and go for it!

Have you ever done something that was just so weird to do at first, but now you enjoy it? For me, that was watching movies at the theater by myself. It was an odd feeling because going to the movies had always been a group activity. I started doing it to kill time in college. I had about a 5 hour gap in between classes. It didn’t make sense to go back home because of the traffic and commute, and I could only study for so long. And as a freshman, I didn’t have a lot of friends. As a commuter student, I wasn’t able to commit to extra curricular activities. So I spent a lot of time by myself. After exploring the city as much as I can and shopping (even window shopping) got old, I started going to the movies. It was cheaper back then.

Then I went through a period of dating God and myself. I started going to restaurants by myself. That took some getting used to. But I had my journal and sometimes a Bible, and over time, it felt natural. Same goes for the movies. Actually, now I prefer it. It’s less hassle and I can watch what I want to watch when I want to watch it.

What would take just a little bit more courage is to go solo to an event that involves other people. Like a Meetup or a community event. My advice is to start small.

Check out the events happening at your local library. Granted, most of them might cater to children, but families are always welcome. I’ve attended events where I did feel a little odd because I was by myself surrounded by parents and kids. But it has always been welcoming. A lot of libraries need and want the community support and participation, and you’re part of the community. Just be open, smile a lot, and join in!

Meetup is gaining popularity, and there are many different kinds of groups on there. Each group caters to different interest or hobbies or life stages (parents, singles, professionals, dancers, investors, etc). It’s free to sign up for the site, but not all events are free to attend. Check out the website to learn more. I’m not being paid to tell you that, by the way, and to be honest, I’ve only been to 1 Meetup. I went with my sister to a Meetup at somebody’s house. We made Christmas cards, and it was a lot of fun! There was a suggested donation of $5 to help pay for the craft materials.

I prefer the library events because they’re free 🙂 Plus, I’m a kid at heart. At the library, I’ve also attended an event where we made Christmas cards. I learned that layering is the key to DIY cards! I’ve also seen a harpist and puppeteers perform. I’ve attended a short film screening.

There are lot of events we single ladies can attend. It’s fun to bring friends, but if you’re the only one available, don’t let going solo stop you from doing something you want to do. Stay safe, stay warm, and have fun!
