Singles Awareness Day

Singles Awareness Day started off as a joke. For a very long time, the pressure is on for us singles to find someone in time for Valentine’s Day. Whether the pressure is from our parents, friends, or the media (thanks Hallmark channel), we just can’t escape it. At church, I don’t get it as often as my other single friends. I think the couples are too grateful that somebody’s there to babysit for free during the Couples’ Valentine’s Dinner (you’re welcome).

Well now, SAD is taking a life of its own. That acronym though. SAD. Really? Still, even that has been redeemed. Single Awareness Day started when singles referred to Valentine’s Day as SAD, since you know…we’re single and it’s sad to be alone of Valentine’s Day.

But most of us are happy being single! There’s nothing wrong with it and there’s nothing wrong with being single on February 14. So we’re reclaiming SAD and turning it into a celebration of our singleness, of our friendships, and of our happiness. Some celebrate SAD on February 14, but it’s now more popular to celebrate today, February 15.

So happy Singles Awareness Day! Or Singles Appreciation Day!

Happy Singles Awareness Day!

I raise a toast and shout a big hoorah! to all my single friends out there! You deserve to be celebrated and recognized for all your efforts such as:

Actually meaning it when you say, “In God’s time.”

Being witty with, “But then who’ll babysit for you?”

Or funny and serious with, “Single and ready to mingle.”

You deserve a standing ovation for not crying too much from watching Hallmark and Lifetime movies.

You deserve a medal for all the times you were forced to catch the bouquet or the garter.

You are a hero for all the times you didn’t flaunt your freedom to make any plans you want in front of your married friends, especially the ones with kids, even though Friday nights look like Netflix and chill with a bucket of popcorn.

But really, embrace your single life. Whether it’s a season or a lifetime, ain’t nothing wrong with you. I hope you remember that you are loved. You are known. You are not alone. Your life is full.

Shout it out, my single friends!
