Stranded on a Desert Island

For the month of October, I’m joining the Write 31 Days challenge with 31 Days of Vlogging, where I blog and write for 31 days. My goal is to write on the weekends and vlog on the weekdays. Today’s post comes from the Write 31 Days writing prompt: If you were stranded on a desert island, what would you miss most about your current life.

Fresh water.

Though it’s an island, I don’t know how to desalinate water. Since it’s a desert island, I assume there’s no source of fresh water on it. So fresh water. I will definitely miss fresh water.

To make this very short answer and blog post longer, let me tell you a water story.

When I lived in the Philippines, our bathrooms had a water drum because we didn’t always have running water. If the drum was empty, there was a community water pump to fill it up. Many homes were like this, even in suburban communities where we were. That’s why Filipinos have a tabo (tah-boh), a small bucket we scooped water from the drum with. You used it to pour water on you or your essential parts. Water was a commodity you couldn’t allow to just run.

I forget that most days. I take water for granted when I brush my teeth or shower extra longer than usual or I’m able to drink a liter of water everyday.

I visited a Blue Bottle location recently, and they were selling these pins that celebrated their 15th year anniversary. 100% of the proceeds from the sale of those pins benefited to Charity: Water, which was awesome so I bought one. Charity: Water is a nonprofit that works to bring clean and safe drinking water to people in developing countries.

Now, if we’re talking about being stranded on a deserted island, which may not be a desert island, I would miss other conveniences we take for granted like feminine products and grocery stores because I would have a hard time hunting, fishing, and/or gathering food.
