Weekend Fun and Book List

Weekend Fun

I haven’t written a Weekend Fun post in a while, so I thought I would because fun is important. Someone I knew posted a harsh criticism of our president because of a video of him dancing. He was criticized for being a bad president because he was having fun instead of working.

I wouldn’t want to follow a leader who doesn’t have fun. I used to think being a leader was being “on” all the time. Always working. Always serious and somber. Always upholding her persona of a leader. Hiding the times you have fun. Hiding your flaws. Hiding your weaknesses. I learned – the hard way – that’s the fast way to burnout.

Leaders are held to higher standards, as they should be, but they’re people too. An effective leader knows when to work and when to have fun – and what kind of fun to have. An effective person understands the need for balance. Balance is attainable. There is such thing as balance, but instead of spinning multiple plates at the same time, it’s knowing which plates to spin at certain times.

We live through seasons. Some seasons are full of work, while others are full of rest. We find some rest in seasons of work and some work in seasons of rest. Some seasons are sorrowful, but we grasp onto those moments of joy and seek out light, love, and beauty. Some seasons are joyful, but we still empathize and weep with those who weep.

So dance if you need to dance. Laugh even if you’re by yourself. Cry at the smallest things. Scream in frustration. Get it out. Express your emotions, and then move forward. Keep moving forward. That’s life.

What I’m reading.
Or about to read. I think reading is fun so I’m sharing with you the books on my current reading list. There’s a lot! I’m not a fast reader, especially nonfiction books that I want to digest and reflect through so books tend to pile up around me. Currently, here are the books I’m reading or about to start reading.

Reading Now

Brazen by Leanna Tankersley I received “Brazen” as part of Leanna’s launch team, and I’m loving doing the Reflection and Expression exercises, which is why it’s taking me long to finish reading it. But I’m loving what Leanna has to say and personally feel that Chapter 6 was written especially for me ;-).

More by Benny Perez I was supposed to finish this a long time ago! I received this book as part of Ryan Frank’s Inner Circle program. I missed the live discussion because of other commitments, but there’s so much honesty in this book that I haven’t abandoned it.

Building Children’s Ministry by Tina Houser I’m about to start reading this book as part of Kidmin Academy. I think I’m supposed to have finished reading it by next week. I’m loving learning from Tina and pretty much hope she’s my grandma. She has so many amazing insights and I could just imagine how exciting it is to be a child in her class/small group.

Gaps in Stone Walls by John Neufeld This book is for my ASL class. I haven’t started, but thank God it’s less than 200 pages. I need to write a report about it, too. I haven’t written a book report in so long!

Looking for Lovely by Annie F. Downs I’m saving this for when I have time to savor Annie’s words, but it definitely bumped some other books down the reading list! I have to remind myself to read the books for school first before I crack this one open. Oh the wait!

Other books I started reading, but haven’t finished yet are:

You Are A Writer by Jeff Goins (it’s on Bookgrabbr on my phone, so I read it in my fringe hours)

Volunteers That Stick by Jim Wideman

Making Your Children’s Ministry the Best Hour of Every Kid’s Week by Sue Miller  (I think this one’s also a book I need to read for Kidmin Academy)

And the two books on my Amazon shopping cart are:

Quiet by Susan Cain (been meaning to read this for a while now)

The Little Paris Bookshop by Nina George (I read an excerpt from this book and I am so hooked! But alas, my list is full so this one’s waiting on the wings.)

What’s on your reading list? I realize asking that question might make my list so much longer, but I’m actually okay with that! I have so many other books waiting to be read, what’s a few more?

I'd love to hear from you!
