“I didn’t realize this was the dress I wore LAST Sunday!” she exclaimed.Blog-tember Challenge prompt: Share your style.
What fashion trends do you love, frequent, or avoid?
My fashion style is a mix of casual, girly, and edgy. I love colors and wear minimal makeup, if any at all, unless it’s Sunday, a special occasion, girl’s night out, or just because. I love accessories that are quirky and classic, and comfortable shoes. I’ve been known to walk barefoot if I can’t make it in my heels! I could live in leggings and dresses.
Interesting cultural fact! Filipinos have house clothes to wear inside the house. These are any old clothes, basic pieces, gym clothes, or shirts you get from volunteering or running a marathon. It helps keep your nice clothes last longer! Any other cultures do this? I think it’s genius 🙂
I avoid crop tops, midriffs (why did that even come back?), short shorts, cut-out dresses, sheer tops worn without camisoles, and tops with huge armholes that display the bra. I also avoid camo and animal prints. I believe in hiding your bra straps as much as possible and wearing slips/half-slips if needed.
I believe that if you serve in Children’s Ministry, the bottom line is this: What we wear can affect how we lead our classes and present the Gospel. If what we wear restricts us from giving our best, there’s a problem. That can be said for other things.
The biggest fashion lessons I’ve learned and stuck with are:
Your heart will determine your attitude, and your attitude will carry your style. When my heart was hiding insecurities about my body, there were styles I couldn’t pull off because I didn’t have the confidence. I hid behind clothes. Getting my heart in the right place gave me the right attitude about my body and the confidence to carry out the style/clothes I wanted to wear.
Dress for God and yourself. That’s sounds like a cliched Christian saying, but hear me out. As a single lady, it’s easy to dress to seduce and show off; I’ve done it. When I knew I would be seen in public when I’ve gone out with friends, I’ve taken forever to get ready because a handsome stranger might see me. Also, I wanted to show my married or in-relationship friends that I’m doing amazing. I guess, I was channeling my inner Sasha Fierce.
The problem is I’m looking for validation from the wrong places. My heart was in the wrong place. When I dress for God, I dress my heart first, asking Him to remind me of my worth found in Him. I ask God to remind me that I’m on reserve for His plans. Then I dress for myself: to have fun, to reflect the joy inside, and to respect the body God has given me.
Different Target branches have the same clothes in clearance at different prices, and Ross stores in “richer” parts of the city will have designer/brand name dresses on clearance for less than $15. The key is patience. Patience to shop at different branches. Patience for prices to go even lower. Patience to sift through the clearance racks. Good things come to those who wait.
